Where to find the best meatballs and burgers in Sofia

Where to find the best meatballs and burgers in Sofia

Although lately I prefer the vegetarian version of almost any meal, there is one reason why I would never become a vegetarian. This reason is called meatballs. I adore them, especially when combined with tomato salad and Bulgarian white cheese. If you haven’t tried Bulgarian white cheese yet, it is something similar to Feta cheese.

So I decided to go out on research and find where are the best meatballs and burgers in Sofia. It wasn’t an easy task to try all of them. It was even more difficult to choose my favourite ones. In this post I also included burgers, because they are just meatballs served in a different way. I warn you, don’t read the post if you are hungry.

The best burgers in Sofia

Boom! Burgers

Address: see the map
Opening hours:
From Sunday to Thursday: 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM
Friday and Saturday: 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM

The winner in the category, the best burgers in Sofia, beyond doubt is Boom! Burgers. I chose the classic – the cheeseburger and didn’t have any regrets at all.

Cheeseburger

Cheeseburger

It was the tastiest burger I have tried in my whole life. The meat combined with the melted cheddar was incredibly delicious. The French fries and the onion rings were also very good. The last two have to be ordered separately. They don’t come along with the burger. If you are a fan of milk shakes, don’t miss to try one here in Boom! Burgers.

Meat

Address: 1 Angel Kanchev Str, Sofia
Opening hours: Daily 11:30 AM – 10:30 PM

As you might suppose by the name, this place Meat is for meat lovers. They offer delicious burgers and gourmet sandwiches, all of them made with high quality products.

Again, I tried the cheeseburger to have a base for comparison with the other restaurants. It was tasty, but if I have to choose – I prefer Meat for gourmet sandwiches and Boom! Burgers for burgers.

Street Chefs

Address: 2-4 Kozyak Str, Sofia
Opening hours: Daily 11:30 AM – 10:30 PM

If you have lived long enough in Sofia, you probably have noticed that there isn’t any quality street food. In fact the street food is terrible. There wasn’t any good place for a quick bite until the opening of Street Chefs.

Street Chefs are a food truck located in the heart of the city. All I can say is that their burgers are amazing. The French fries are one of my favourites.

There are places to sit outside, so I prefer to visit Street Chefs when the weather is not cold.

SkaraBar

Address: see the map
Opening hours:
From Monday to Saturday: 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Sunday: 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM

SkaraBar have been my favourite restaurant for meatballs in Sofia for years and till now I haven’t found any other to replace it.

The meatballs are grilled on wood coals and they are served with roast potatoes, cabbage salad and ljutenica. Ljutenica is a Bulgarian chutney made from red peppers, tomatoes, eggplant and carrots.

I love how they serve the bread – grilled with olive oil and savory.

The Little Things

Address: 37 Tsar Shishman Str, Sofia
Opening hours: Daily 12:00 PM – 00:00

There are many beautiful houses from the last century in the city center of Sofia. Most of them are not restored and look terrible because of their crumbling facades. Fortunately some of them have the chance to receive a new life housing a restaurant.

The Little Things restaurant occupies one of these old houses. Going there to dine is like visiting the house of an old friend. The atmosphere is calm and trendy with a great attention to the details.

It is not only this feeling that brings me back to the place, but it is also the food. Their meatballs are one of the best in Sofia.

Made in home

Address: 30 Angel Kanchev Str, Sofia
Opening hours:
Monday: 11:00 AM – 09:00 PM
From Tuesday to Thursday: 11:00 AM – 10:30 PM
Friday and Saturday: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Sunday: 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

If I have to describe this place with one word, it will be – arty. Some tables are made from old doors or glazed tiles, chairs don’t match each other, drawings are hanging on the walls.

The menu is small, but what I love about it is the variety. You can find meals from all over the world – like Italian, Bulgarian or even Iranian cuisine. All of them are very delicious. I can say this from my own experience, as this is one of my favourite restaurants in Sofia (not only for meatballs).

This time I chose the meatballs and I wasn’t disappointed. The meatballs served with potatoes and green salad were fantastic. Don’t miss their raspberry cheesecake. It is to die for.

Made in Blue

Address: 6 Yuri Venelin Str, Sofia
Opening hours:
From Monday to Thursday: 10:30 AM – 10:30 PM
From Friday to Sunday: 10:30 AM – 11:00 PM

If you happen to pass along it, Made in Blue would definitely catch your eyes. The restaurant occupies an old house with beautifully painted blue facade. The small garden gives an additional charm to the whole picture.

The owners of Made in Blue and Made in Home are one and the same. For me this was enough to give it a try. The same artistic atmosphere that you already know from Made in Home will follow you here.  The difference is that the place is bigger and calmer.

The meatballs served with potatoes and green salad were equally tasty as the ones in Made in Home. Don’t miss their desserts, too.

The Thirsty Dragon

Address: 2, 13-ti Mart Str, Sofia
Opening hours: Daily 12:00 PM – 00:00

If you like craft beer with meatballs and French fries, the Thirsty Dragon is your place. It is a pub with a little green yard in front of it. Don’t be fooled by the name. There isn’t any thirsty dragon that will come and drink your beer. Or at least it won’t appear if you stick only to few beers and don’t go over your limit.

The portion of meatballs was enormous and tasty. It was the right addition to my cold beer.

Raketa Rakia Bar

Address: 17 Yanko Sakazov Str, Sofia
Opening hours: Daily 11:00 AM – 00:00

If you want to take a trip back in time and see what people used during the socialist regime in Bulgaria, go to Raketa Rakia Bar. The interior combines old TV sets, sewing machines, communist posters and other old stuff in a unique way.

Their speciality is the popular Bulgarian drink – rakia. It is a fruit brandy and in the past almost every household produced their own. Don’t miss to order one if you have never tried it before.

The meatballs I ordered were served with beans, cabbage, potatoes and of course – ljutenica.

I also tried the parsley balls. Both of them were great.
