Interesting facts about Borovets
- Borovets (Боровец) is a popular ski resort in Bulgaria. It is located at an altitude of 1350 m on the northern slopes of Rila, only 72 km from the capital Sofia.
- It is in fact the oldest winter resort in Bulgaria, founded in 1896 as a hunting place for the Bulgarian monarchs.
- The former royal palace Tsarska Bistritsa (Царска Бистрица) is built between 1898 and 1914. Tsar Ferdinand and his son Boris III used it for a hunting lodge. You can visit the palace on your own or you can join a tour that also includes a visit to the royal residence of Vrana and a medieval fortress.
- The ski pistes are 24 with total length of 58 km. The longest run is 12 km.
How to get to Borovets
Every 30 minutes a minibus departs from South Bus Station in Sofia (Avtogara Yug – Автогара Юг) to Samokov. From there you have to take a minibus to Borovets (there are minibuses every 30 minutes). In the ski resort the minibus stops in front of Hotel Samokov and it departs back to Samokov in front of Hotel Ela.
Best time to visit Borovets
The high season begins at the end of December and continues to March.
