Summer 2017 – Gelato and towers

Summer 2017 - Gelato and towers

To be honest, summer is my least favourite season. It is too hot for me. It’s the time when I dream to be somewhere in the north – like Scotland or Denmark. Thus I spent most of the summer working on my blog.

Where I have been

Plovdiv, Bulgaria – July
Pisa, Italy – September
Lucca, Italy – September

I have been to Plovdiv several times till now, mostly to go to concerts in the Roman Amphitheatre. This time I went to a concert of Placebo. The trip started with extremely hot weather and ended with heavy rain. The temperatures were over 40 °C (100 °F) during the day. I had to skip some of the sites of my itinerary because it was too hot to explore the city.

As I am a huge pasta and wine lover, I try to visit Italy every year. This time I chose Pisa and Lucca for a short weekend getaway. You’ll need no more than a day to see each of them. I liked Lucca more than Pisa. Lucca is a charming little city with cobblestone streets and many towers.

Highlights

Tried a vegetarian burger for the first time (and it wasn’t bad at all)

I am not a vegetarian, but for the last couple of months, I caught myself cooking mostly vegetarian meals. I just don’t feel like eating meat at all. Thus I decided it is time to taste a vegetarian burger. I tried this delicious thing at Boom! Burgers in Sofia.

Found the best pizza in Sofia

I have tried several good pizzas in few Italian restaurants in Sofia, but the one at Franco’s Pizza was to die for. It was a love from the first bite.

Attend an open-air concert

Maymunarnika in Sofia is an awesome place for concerts. You can order some food and beer, too. They serve the best French fries I have ever tried!

The most stunning views over Sofia

If you want to see this sight with your own eyes, you just have to go to Vitosha Mountain. It is an easy hike, less than 2 hours from Aleko Chalet. The place is called – Kamen Del.

Saw some stunning country scenes

I love to travel through Bulgaria in July. It is the time when the sunflower fields are blooming. The sight of endless yellow fields is truly fascinating.

Was charmed by the little city of Lucca

Although it was raining almost all the time during my visit, I was captured by the beauty of Lucca. I find it so much prettier than Pisa.

Stunning views through the airplane window

On my flight back home the plane broke before taking off. We had to wait more than an hour for them to fix it. At least the view was nice.

Where I stayed

For my trip to Plovdiv, I used Airbnb again. The apartment has a great location, but it wasn’t clean enough for my taste.

Luckily the Airbnb accommodation in Pisa was lovely. It was a two-floor apartment with an awesome rooftop terrace. One of the bedrooms even had a glass ceiling! It was possible to hear the rain falling down above you.

What I read

The Mist by Stephen King
I’ve been a huge fan of Stephen King all my life. I love almost all of his books. The Mist lived up to my expectations, too. It tells the story of a small town, that is covered in an unnatural mist filled with otherworldly monsters.

The Colour Out of Space by H. P. Lovecraft
The Nameless City by H. P. Lovecraft
The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H. P. Lovecraft
I’ve been meaning to read something of Lovecraft for ages. Finally, I did it and I was fascinated. The Shadow Over Innsmouth was awesome.

The Demon Soul by Richard A. Knaak
Awesome fantasy based on the World of Warcraft game.

The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory
A historical book about the reign of Henry VIII and few of his wives.

What games I played

World of Warcraft
I started this game two years ago and I’m still playing.

What I watched

Secrets of Great British Castles
A British documentary series about a dozen magnificent castles all over the UK with my favourite TV presenter, Dan Jones.

Wolf Hall
The series tells the story about Thomas Cromwell, the King Henry VIII’s chief minister.

Poldark
British drama series about a young redcoat returning home after the American Revolutionary War.

Versailles
The series tells the story of the construction of the Palace of Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King.

Game of Thrones
I think that this one doesn’t need any explanation.

It
As a fan of Stephen King, I couldn’t miss this movie. Although I prefer the book, I was pleased with the movie.

Becoming Jane
The movie tells the story of the famous writer Jane Austen. It became one of my favourite movies!

What I listened to

In the last several months I mostly listened to some awesome German bands like Lord Of The Lost, Deine Lakaien and Diary Of Dreams.

Favourite songs for the last three months:

Lord Huron – The Night We Met
Eddie Vedder – Society
Brandon Jenner – Burning Ground

Diary Of Dreams – She And Her Darkness
Deine Lakaien – The Game
Deine Lakaien – Where The Winds Don’t Blow
Deine Lakaien – Vivre
Deine Lakaien – Over And Done

The 69 Eyes – Never
Gothminister – Monsters
Lord Of The Lost – Blood for Blood
Lord of the Lost – Waiting for You to Die
Lord of the Lost – Raining Stars

Trivium – The Heart From Your Hate
Motionless In White – Break The Cycle

Inspiring thought

Sometimes life doesn’t give you something you want, not because you don’t deserve it, but because you deserve more.
