Where to Stay in Mallorca (Palma & Best Beach Hotels)

A complete guide to where to stay in Mallorca (+ the best places to stay in Palma, for nightlife, cycling and the best beachfront hotels).

Situated in the western Mediterranean Sea, Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic archipelago. It is known for its stunning landscapes, beaches with clear turquoise waters and old traditional fishing villages. Mallorca is a very popular vacation destination and it’s undoubtedly one of the top spots in Europe for beautiful beaches.

The island features a varied landscape. The dramatic Tramuntana mountain range dominates the western part of the island, offering breathtaking views and hiking opportunities. Here you’ll find Mallorca’s prettiest villages such as Deià, Soller and Valldemossa.

In contrast, the northern coast of the island is characterized by pristine long beaches and clear waters. The eastern coast is home to many pretty coves with small sandy beaches and cliffs on both sides such as Cala d’Or. And towards the south of the island lies Palma, the capital city of Mallorca.

If you are wondering where to stay in Mallorca, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered. In this guide, you’ll find the best places to stay on the island, whether you’re looking for beaches, nightlife, cycling or hotels in Palma.

Where I stayed in Mallorca

During my one-week stay in Mallorca, I decided to split my time between two locations – Palma, the main town, and Alcúdia, a great beach town. On one hand, I wanted to explore the island. On the other hand, I wanted to have a beach vacation without spending a lot of time on bus rides.

My favourite place to stay in Palma: Hotel Basilica (perfect central location, great terrace with city views and outdoor pool)
My favourite place to stay in Mallorca (for beach): Viva Golf (right on the beach, great outdoor swimming pool, fantastic breakfast)

By choosing Palma and Alcúdia I got the best of both worlds – the lively city vibe and the relaxed beach atmosphere (all while easily getting around the island without a car). Moreover, Alcúdia boasts some of the longest sandy beaches in Mallorca. Additionally, from Palma, I could easily go on day trips to Valldemossa and Sóller. I highly recommend both towns as perfect bases to explore the island, especially if you’re travelling without a car.

Tips for booking a hotel in Mallorca

Don’t stay in one place (if your trip is longer than 3-4 days) – Mallorca is a big island, so if you want to explore much of it, I’d recommend choosing two accommodations – one in Palma and another next to the beach. This will save you a lot of driving time and you’ll have the beach just steps away. There is no beach within the city centre of Palma, the nearest ones are a short bus ride away.

Where to stay in Palma de Mallorca

The best place to stay in Mallorca is Palma, the island’s vibrant capital city. Situated in the southwest of the island, the city is home to Palma de Mallorca Airport, one of the busiest airports in Spain. Also, Palma is well-linked with public transportation, making it easy to explore the entire island from here.

Palma de Mallorca, also known as Palma, is famous for its historical charm, stunning architecture, and lively atmosphere. The Old Town (Casco Antiguo) is compact and easily walkable, making it perfect for a weekend getaway. It is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, charming squares (such as Plaça de Cort) and historic buildings.

Palma has several landmarks, including La Seu (the breathtaking Gothic cathedral) and the Almudaina Palace, which was originally a Moorish fortress. And if you’re a shopping enthusiast, head to Paseo del Borne and Avinguda Jaume III, home to high-end boutiques and many international brands.

The best area to stay in Palma de Mallorca is between La Seu, located at the waterfront, and Estació Intermodal (Intermodal Station). You’ll be just a short walk from numerous restaurants, bars and the city’s most popular attractions, including Almudaina Palace, Plaça de Cort and the cathedral. For day trips, simply head to Intermodal Station, where you can catch a bus to the famous villages of Valldemossa, Sóller or Deià. During my few days in Palma, I stayed here and loved the convenience of the area, with everything right on my doorstep.

The only disadvantage is there is no beach within Palma’s city centre. The nearest beach is C’an Pere Antoni, which is a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute bus ride away. A 10-minute walk from C’an Pere Antoni you’ll find Playa de Palma, the longest and lively beach near Palma. Other popular beaches near the city are Cala Major and Can Pastilla (both 30min bus ride away).

Don’t forget to buy a skip-the-line to the Cathedral of Mallorca (it’s the most popular attraction on the whole island).

Port d’Alcúdia – the best place to stay in Mallorca for beach

Port d’Alcúdia – Where to stay in Mallorca for the best beaches

Mallorca has more than 200 beaches, ranging from secluded coves to sandy shored with crystal waters. Some of the island’s most picturesque beaches include Es Trenc, Platja de Formentor, Caló del Moro, Cala Mesquida and Cala d’Or. However, the longest stretch of sandy coastline in Mallorca is found at Alcúdia Beach and Playa de Muro.

The best place to stay in Mallorca for the finest beaches on the island is Port d’Alcúdia. The port is home to Alcúdia Beach and Playa de Muro, which together form the largest beach on the island (approximately 10km or 6.2 miles). Both beaches feature fine white sand and shallow clear blue waters – ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. There are numerous beachfront hotels and resorts for families or adults only.

Port d’Alcúdia is situated on the Bay of Alcúdia, one of the largest bays in the Balearic Islands. The nearby town, Alcúdia, is a charming historic area with narrow cobblestone streets, 14th-century medieval walls and Roman ruins. It’s a great place to explore the local culture, visit historic sites, and enjoy traditional Spanish cuisine. There is also a weekly market, held on Tuesdays and Sundays, which is one of the largest in Mallorca.

A short drive from Port d’Alcúdia, you’ll find Cap de Formentor (featuring some of the best views of the island) and S’Albufera Natural Park (wetland area, perfect for nature lovers and bird watching). And if you want a break from the beach, head to Hidropark Alcúdia, a large waterpark with water slides, wave pools and a lazy river.

While Mallorca has numerous stunning beaches, I opted to stay in Port d’Alcúdia because it has the longest sandy beach on the island! Additionally, I enjoyed the extra dining and shopping options in the nearby town of Alcúdia (which was within walking distance).

Why stay in Port d’Alcúdia for the best beaches

  • Port d’Alcúdia is home to the longest beaches in Mallorca – Alcúdia Beach and Playa de Muro

Magaluf – the best place to stay in Mallorca for nightlife

The best place to stay in Mallorca for nightlife is Magaluf. This popular resort, home to numerous nightclubs, bars and lively restaurants, is the island’s party capital. The nightlife scene often features international DJs, themed parties, and beachfront events.

Magaluf is situated on the island’s southwestern coast, about 15 kilometres (9 miles) southwest of the capital city, Palma de Mallorca. Famous for its vibrant and dynamic nightlife, it attracts a younger and energetic crowd. The town features also a long sandy beach with clear water, Platja de Magaluf. Along the beachfront, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclubs, such as the trendy Nikki Beach Mallorca. The most popular areas for nightlife are Magaluf Square and Carrer Punta Ballena.

Magaluf is home to BCM Planet Dance, the largest club on the island. Other popular places are Stereo Mallorca, PIANO BAR, Bar Papis Live Music & Cocktails and Zen Lounge Bar. For delicious food head to The Blue Bar (an excellent restaurant) or Folies Beach Club Calvià (the best sangria on the island).

Outside of nightlife, Magaluf offers some fun attractions such as Western Water Park, Katmandu Park and Momentum Plaza, a big shopping centre.

Magaluf is definitely the best place to stay if you’re looking to party at night and hit the beach during the day. However, it could be quite noisy at night. So if you have trouble sleeping, I’d recommend staying in Palma Nova. Situated adjacent to Magaluf, Palma Nova is a 10-15 minute walk from the popular bars and clubs.
