Centrally located, Bologna is a great base to explore the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. This pretty medieval city boasts a rich history, eye-catching attractions and the best food in Italy. You’ll find not only still intact ancient structures, but also charming piazzas, palaces and the oldest university in Europe!

Visiting Bologna for the first time? Then take a look at my in-depth Bologna itinerary. It covers not only the main tourist attractions but as well as how to get to the city from the airport and where to eat the best pasta.

The city of Bologna is divided into six administrative districts (quartieri). However, if you’re visiting for tourism, the historic city centre is the place where you’ll spend most of your time. This is probably the perfect area for first-timers (unless you’re travelling by car).

Where I stayed

I visited Bologna as a part of my Italian trip, which also included Florence. This was my first time in the city and I wanted to see the best of it during my short stay. Thus, I needed accommodation close to Piazza Maggiore (where most of the tourist sights are). In addition, I preferred to be within walking distance to the train station, as I would travel by train to Florence.

My favourite place to stay in Bologna is Hotel Cavour. It’s right in the middle of the historic city centre and at walking distance to the Central train station. The perfect location for sightseeing, eating out and day trips.

If you’re visiting Bologna for tourism and want to be close to everything, stay in the area between Piazza Maggiore and the train station. This is the best location for sightseeing, dining out and day trips by train.

Where to stay in Bologna with a car

Almost all of the historic centre is a Limited Traffic Zone (LTZ). Additionally, it’s divided into three smaller zones – Zona Sirio, Zona T and Zona Universitaria.

You can access Zona Sirio if you’re staying in a hotel in the area. Keep in mind that in this case, the hotel must communicate your license plate to the city office. Also, be careful not to enter in the Zona T and Zona Universitaria, because they have stronger restrictions and you’ll be fined.

The best place to stay in Bologna if you’re travelling by car is outside the historic city centre. If you look at a map, this means outside the yellow hexagon. In this way, you won’t accidentally enter the LTZ. Plus, you’ll be still within walking distance to the main tourist sites.
