What area to stay in Cologne, Germany? The Rhine river cuts the city into two halves that are connected by four bridges. The Old City (Altstadt) lies on the west bank, right in the city centre. Here are also most of the attractions, bars and restaurants, including the Central Railway station (Köln Hauptbahnhof). Everything is conveniently packed in one place. Actually, the Old Town is the best area to stay in Cologne not only for sightseeing but also for shopping.
