Where to Stay in Rome – The Best Area and Places

Where to stay in Rome, Italy

Where to stay in Rome, Italy

Choosing where to stay in Rome can be overwhelming, especially when it’s your first time to the city. What is the best location to stay in Rome? Should you choose a place near to Colosseum or Spanish Steps or Termini station?

In this article, I cover the most preferable places to stay, plus the most booked Rome hotels in these areas.

Where is Rome located in Italy

Rome is located in the central part of the Italian peninsula. Initially built on seven hills, the city has spread during its 3000 years of existence.

River Tiber divides the city into two halves. On the east side, you’ll find most of the tourist attractions like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Trevi Fountain. The west part is dominated by the Vatican City and Trastevere, the most picturesque neighbourhood.

Rome was the heart of the ancient Roman Empire and today it’s the capital city of Italy. Also, the city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church. It has always been a centre of power, religion and culture. No wonder why it’s called the Eternal City.

Where I stayed

I spent 4 days in Rome in the late autumn. For me, 4 days is the perfect amount of time to explore the city at a peaceful pace.

My flight back home was a really early one. So I had to take the shuttle bus to Fiumicino Airport before the working hours of the public transport. There are two stops of the shuttle bus – Termini Station and Piazza Cavour. Therefore I had two options – to stay near the Termini Station or Vatican City.

Finally, I decided that Vatican City was the better option. In this way, I was able to get up early and avoid the crowds for St. Peter’s Basilica. Plus, I managed to take some beautiful late night photos of the church.

It’s a lovely 4-star hotel, located only 300m away from St. Peter’s Basilica. Plus, there are a lot of restaurants nearby and a metro station in a few minutes walk.

Ancient ruins, Baroque churches, Renaissance palaces, you’ll find it all here. Just walk out of your door and you’ll find yourself surrounded by centuries-old history.

It’s a wonderful place to wander both day and night. Moreover what could be more magical than looking out of your hotel window to the incredible sights of the Eternal City.
